Renée Cox: A Proof of Being presents a selection of the best-known and most celebrated photographs produced by the artist since 1992. The exhibition traces the evolution of Cox’s practice through a series of performative self-portraits, demonstrating the ways in which she has reclaimed art historical themes in order to explore notions of womanhood, beauty, and agency.

On view in the exhibition are photographs from some of the artist’s most recognizable bodies of work, including her groundbreaking Yo Mama series (1992–94) and her monumental photograph The Signing(2017). Renée Cox: A Proof of Being also marks the New York premiere of a recent work, the immersive video installation Soul Culture (2022).

This is the story of the creation of an astonishing house that renews and reinvigorates the spirit of the avant-garde in the Hamptons. Architecture critic Paul Goldberger tells the story of an extraordinary house on the Atlantic Double Dunes in East Hampton—Blue Dream, the result of a remarkable collaboration between collectors Julie Reyes Taubman and Robert Taubman, who together with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, builder Ed Bulgin, landscape architect Michael Boucher, and designer Michael Lewis, sought to renew the legacy of modernist architecture and art in the Hamptons.

Goldberger offers insight into the complex process by which an architectural idea generated a work that stands as the most striking addition of our time to the roster of architecturally ambitious modernist houses on Long Island. As he notes, “There are relatively few books devoted to the architecture of a single house, but what is clear if you read any of them is that they are stories about clients as much as about architects.” So it is with Blue Dream, where the Taubmans were inspired by the avant-garde spirit of artists and architects who settled and worked in the Hamptons and set out to create a house like no other, a house whose complex curving forms could only be built using the composite material used to make fighter jets.

Iwan Baan’s photographic portfolio documents Blue Dream across four seasons. Goldberger’s text is illustrated with images of earlier modernist houses that inspired the project, as well as documentation of the design process involved in the making of Blue Dream itself.

 

BOOK TALK: Carmela Ciuraru in Conversation with Katie Couric

Join Carmela Ciuraru, author of the critically acclaimed Lives of the Wives (selected as one of the “Best Books of 2023 so far” by The New York Times) for an insightful and humorous conversation with her longtime friend, the renowned journalist Katie Couric.

The history of wives is largely one of silence, resilience, and forbearance. Toss in celebrity, male privilege, ruthless ambition, narcissism, misogyny, infidelity, alcoholism, and a mood disorder or two, and it’s easy to understand why the marriages of so many famous writers have been stormy, short-lived, and mutually destructive. “It’s been my experience,” as the critic and novelist Elizabeth Hardwick once wrote, “that nobody holds a man’s brutality to his wife against him.” Literary wives are a unique breed, requiring a particular kind of fortitude.

Lives of the Wives is a witty, provocative look inside the tumultuous marriages of five writers, illuminating the creative process and the role of money, power, and fame in these complex and fascinating relationships. The book pays tribute to these women, and the price they paid for their own creative ambition, success, and freedom. The Washington Post praises Lives of the Wives as “a tour de force….the stories Ciuraru tells are gripping, horrific, and sometimes even funny—but most of all they are important.”

LEIBER’S LEGACY: A Teen Fashion Show

Join us at The Leiber Collection for Guild Hall Teen Arts Council’s inaugural fashion show, Leiber’s Legacy.

Inspired by the Judith Leiber Collection and in partnership with the Ladies Village Improvement Society, the Guild Hall Teen Arts Council has designed and curated a line of repurposed fashion. The evening will begin with a runway show hosted by stylist, dancer, and drag performer, Danny Ximo, where each Guild Hall Teen Arts Council member will walk the runway in their very own design, and conclude with a reception in The Leiber Collection’s Garden.

Audiences are encouraged to bring their own chairs, blankets, etc., and to arrive early to explore The Leiber Collection.

The Guild Hall Teen Arts Council (GHTAC) is the region’s first paid teen arts program. As employees of Guild Hall, GHTAC members work to curate public programming, advance their creativity, increase Guild Hall’s outreach to local teens, and learn through collaboration with Guild Hall staff.

To celebrate Nick & Toni’s upcoming 35th anniversary, Guild Hall and Florence Fabricant will bring Stirring the Pot to the beloved East Hampton restaurant for a rich, memory-filled conversation with owner Toni Ross, Chef Joe Realmuto, and special guest Chef Jonathan Waxman.

The talk will be followed by a celebratory brunch reception with drinks and samples of the restaurant’s specialties, including zucchini chips, penne alla vecchia bettola, and wood-fired pizza, so guests can mix and mingle with the restaurant’s power team.

Everyone’s favorite night of fun returns this Saturday when Guild Hall’s Furman Garden will be lit up and ready to greet dancers for some uproariously quiet movin’ and groovin’. Wireless headsets will feature three different channels, including 70s disco and funk, 80s and 90s pop and hip-hop, and hits from the 2000s to today. Each station is represented by a color, so when you notice someone having a great time, you can just switch over to that color and join them!

Skip the lines and reserve your headphones in advance – which also guarantees you will get them on arrival! Headsets can be rented on site, but advance reservations are recommended.

Wine, beer, and snacks will be available at our Coffee Bar located in the front lobby.

Join Guild Hall William P. Rayner Artist-in-Residence, Jacob Jonas The Company (JJTC) for an Open Class. This 1-hour physical movement class will combine calisthenics, yoga, and an introduction to the JJTC system.

Jacob Jonas The Company (JJTC) is a Los Angeles based creative company that intersects dance across mediums to make original works and initiates nontraditional collaborations. JJTC has created over 100 original works for the stage and the camera. Presentations in live performance include Kennedy Center, Hollywood Bowl, Lincoln Center, and Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.

ABOUT GUILD HALL WILLIAM P. RAYNER ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The Guild Hall William P. Rayner Artist-in-Residence (WPR AiR) program offers artist collectives the time and space to research, experiment, and develop new ideas and projects. Artists are provided with creative mentorships, administrative support, a commissioning fee, living space, and a purpose-built.

Throughout several 2-4 weeklong residencies, residents connect with accomplished artists, community leaders, and philanthropists at weekly salon dinners. They receive mentorship from select members of the Guild Hall Academy of the Arts, closer collaborators, and professional staff while visiting artist studios, cultural centers, and the natural landscape of the Hamptons. The program culminates with a works-in-process presentation for an invited or public audience.

Residents are invited to the program by a committee of celebrated artists, creative professionals, Guild Hall’s Academy of the Arts members, and Senior Leadership. Past selection committee members and creative mentors have included Alice Aycock, Laurie Anderson, Jon Robbie Baitz, Carter Burwell, Eric Fischl, RoseLee Goldberg, Ugo Rondinone, Phil Schultz, and Susan Stroman.

Artist Collectives selected for the 2023 Guild Hall WPR AiR include Hamptons Dance Project, Music From The Sole, The Beatbox House, and Jacob Jonas The Company.

Hamptons Dance Project Season V will premiere “Glow By Glow” by the choreographer Jorma Elo, commissioned by the Guild Hall William P. Rayner Artist-in-Residence program.

The private address for the performance will be provided to ticket buyers upon confirmation of ticket purchase and again 24 hours prior to the performance date.

It is recommended to bring sunscreen and insect repellent, and wear comfortable shoes, as guests will walk through the natural landscapes from the parking area to the stage. Transport will be available from the parking area to the stage for those who need assistance. Restrooms will be available.
