Join Museum Director/Chief Curator Christina Mossaides Strassfield for an intimate tour of Robert Longo’s A History of the Present.

This long-awaited exhibition is a celebration of and a critical investigation into the span of American history bookended by Abstract Expressionism and the current moment in which we live. In two adjacent galleries Longo juxtaposes America’s past with its present through 17 monumental, highly labor-intensive charcoal drawings that act as mirrors into history.

Guild Hall 90th Birthday Celebration

Guild Hall will celebrate its 90th birthday all day and night on Thursday, August 19! Our current exhibition, Robert Longo: A History of the Present will be on view in the galleries for extended hours from noon to 8PM. The day’s festivities will begin at 11AM with artist Viv Corringham and the founders of Gesso, Henna Wang and Michael Reynolds, who will be giving a personal tour of Full of Noises: A Village Soundwalk at 11AM, followed by Communal Drip Painting with the Pollock-Krasner House & Study Center in the Boots Lamb Education Center from 3-5PM, and Family Gallery Tours with Guild Hall’s FAQ Team at 3:30 and 4:30PM.

At 7:30PM we are thrilled to present New York City Ballet: On & Off Stage indoors in the John Drew Theater. Tickets are going fast, so make your reservation today!

Free birthday cupcakes will be available all day courtesy of Citarella, and the eAT Coffee Bar will be open for refreshments (and cocktails!) from noon to 8PM.

Join us for the finale of a day-long 90th birthday celebration by dancing to the beat of your own playlist! Quiet Events Silent Disco DJ’s will be spinning songs from the 70’s to today that will play on wireless headsets with three channels. The dance party will take place in front of the building and in the John Drew Backyard Theater, so grab your family, friends, neighbors, and strangers and head to Guild Hall on Thursday, August 19 from 8-11pm for the most fun you will ever have!

Skip the lines and reserve your headphones in advance – which also guarantees you will get them on arrival! Headsets can be rented on site, but advance reservations are recommended.

THE TILE CLUB: Plein Air Painting Workshop with Scott Bluedorn at Camp Hero

Community Artist In Residence, Scott Bluedorn will lead a series of plein air painting workshops as a part of his residency project with Guild Hall.  Scott’s project is focused on the history, practice, and revitalization of “The Tile Club;” a group of artists from the late 19th century, who met and painted on decorative tiles, often en plein air, on the Eastern End of Long Island.

Scott will host artists once a month on Wednesdays in June, July and August at the following locations: Camp Hero in Montauk, Gerard Drive in Springs, and Mulford Farm in East Hampton. During these free workshops artists will paint on tiles provided by Guild Hall and are asked to bring their own acrylic paints, brushes, water jar, palette, and protective weather gear. We ask that each participant gives at least one tile to Guild Hall to be included in a final installation culminating this project in the Fall of 2021.

 

Screening of Johnny Mnemonic

Join us for Robert Longo’s 2021 black and white release of Johnny Mnemonic. A data courier, literally carrying a data package inside his head, must deliver it before he dies from the burden or is killed by the Yakuza. Guild Hall 2021 exhibiting artist Robert Longo directed this film.

Little Dancer is an original musical set in the glamorous and dangerous backstage world of the Paris Opera Ballet. Inspired by the life of Marie van Goethem, the headstrong young ballerina who posed for Edgar Degas’s groundbreaking “Little Dancer” sculpture – an unknown dancer who inadvertently became the most famous dancer in the world.

Following current New York State guidelines, Guild Hall will no longer require six feet of social distancing in the John Drew Backyard Theater (with the exception of our KidFEST shows). Guests ages 5 and up attending any show besides a KidFEST performance must show proof of full vaccination or recent negative COVID-19 test results. Scroll down for full details.

A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.  Guild Hall 2021 exhibiting artist Alexis Rockman served as “Inspirational Artist” on the film, preparing conceptual drawings to serve as visual reference.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING PROGRAMS IN THE JOHN DREW BACKYARD THEATER

Following current New York State guidelines, Guild Hall will no longer require six feet of social distancing in the John Drew Backyard Theater (with the exception of our KidFEST shows). Guests ages 5 and up attending any show besides a KidFEST performance must show proof of full vaccination or recent negative COVID-19 test results. Face coverings are now optional for fully vaccinated guests and children under the age of 2 for all shows with the exception of KidFEST performances, when masks are required for all patrons over the age of 2 regardless of vaccination status. 

In order to attend non-KidFEST programs in the John Drew Backyard Theater, guests will be responsible for displaying proof of one of the following on arrival:

  • Full vaccination, meaning both doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine received at least 14 days prior to the day of the program
  • A negative test result from a COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of the day of the program
  • A negative test result from a COVID-19 Antigen test taken within six (6) hours of the program’s scheduled start time
  • Current New York State Excelsior Pass with proof of vaccine or negative testing/Antigen results. Click HERE to download the free app for seamless entry.

Note: Social distancing will continue to be required indoors, for outdoor KidFEST performances, and on the rest of the grounds. Guests will not need to show proof of vaccination or negative test results in these spaces, and will be required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status. Please stay home if you don’t feel well, have exhibited symptoms of COVID-19 in the past 10 days, have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 10 days, or been in contact with someone with COVID-19 in the past 10 days.

The RING THE ALARM series began with discussions with Renee Cox on an exhibition of Black Artists that she will be curating for the summer of 2023.

We believe now more than ever that the need for open dialogue on art, race and politics is timely and something that we as a community at large need to engage in more. Conceived and Curated by Paul Hecht

Tony Nominated actor Paul Hecht, in conjunction with Guild Hall’s Chief Curator Christina Mossaides Strassfield and Amanda Kate Joshi, curates a celebration of spring and the arts as poems of rejuvenation, rebirth and creativity are read in the spirit of hopefulness for a new season by a celebrated cast of artists.  These voiceovers from some of America’s greatest actors will be read and superimposed over a survey of images of some of America’s greatest art from Guild Hall’s Permanent Collection. A true marriage of the visual and performing arts, the evening will feature many luminaries from Guild Hall’s storied Academy of the Arts, complete with the music of guitar virtuoso Ralph Gibson. Featuring F. Murray Abraham, Karen Akers, Wyatt Cenac, Michael Cerveris, Cornelius Eady, Barbara Feldon, Lynnette R. Freeman, Joanna Gleason, Bill Irwin, Cherry Jones, Susan Lucci, Austin Pendleton, Tony Roberts, Mercedes Ruehl, Salman Rushdie, Chris Sarandon, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Harris Yulin.

Ralph Gibson and Marty Cohen in conversation on their new book, Sacred Land – Israel Before and After Time. Photographer Ralph Gibson traveled throughout Israel and the surrounding region to create a portrait of a land where the past is vividly part of the present. He contrasts these in two-page spreads in which color and black-and-white images face one another: ancient language in a visual dialogue with contemporary human experience.
