Jonathan Mastro

Jonathan Mastro is a screenwriter, playwright, composer, musical director, and actor. His first produced screenplay, Viper Club, starring Susan Sarandon, Edie Falco and Matt Bomer premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was released nationwide in Fall of 2018. 

Jonathan also composed music and musical directed David Cromer’s groundbreaking production of Our Town, which ran off-Broadway for a record 644 performances, moved to the Broad (starring Helen Hunt), and was eventually remounted in London at the Almeida.His long collaboration with MacArthur “genius” and Tony-winning Mr. Cromer continued with Come Back, Little Sheba at the Huntington Theater in Boston.

Jonathan was also the Musical Director for Julie Taymor’s Midsummer Night’s Dream and has professionally collaborated with Michael McKean, Michael Shannon, Gerard McBurney, Harold Prince, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra among many others. He acted in and musical directed Arin Arbus’s Taming of the Shrew and has performed in theaters in New York ranging from Theater for A New Audience to the Civilians. His long and fruitful relationship with the Barrow Street Theatre was most recently featured in his role as a guest performer in the critically-acclaimed production of Nassim (February 2019).

His 3 cabaret shows with Emily Bergl (at 54 Below, Café Carlyle and the legendary Oak Room of the Algonquin) were hailed by the New York Times as “sensational,” and featured original material written by him for Ms. Bergl. Jonathan has worked extensively in Chicago, as everything from a jazz pianist (at the legendary Green Mill), to a composer and conductor of musicals (Goodman, Barrel of Monkeys, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Lookingglass, etc.) to an improv comedy musician (Second City, Annoyance, IO, etc.).
