SEA was founded in 1985, to create and to promote the performing arts, showcase the talents of young Latino playwrights, actors, directors and designers. Today, SEA has become a NYC cultural treasure and a leading Latino cultural organization for family audiences. Our home base theatre, Teatro SEA is New York City’s, as well as the Nation’s ONLY Latino Children’s Theatre, that provides a year-round season of family programming. Currently, SEA serves more than 75,000 audience members per year.
Throughout our 30 plus year history, we have brought professional, artistically excellent live theater directly to community centers, cultural venues/theatres, schools and libraries in neighborhoods where Latino’s live. For the nearly ten’s-of-thousands of disenfranchised Latino children and families we serve each year, often this is their first experience of live theater and their only opportunity to interact with professional Latino theater artists.
Our SEAson repertory (over 25 shows in repertory) consists of 4 distinct categories: Latinized Children’s Classics; Latin American Folktales; Children’s Classics from Spain; and a Youth and Adult Series. All of these productions are original and feature new music, sets, costumes, and puppetry. In recognition for our work, SEA has received numerous accolades/awards and our productions have won the ACE, ATI & HOLA Awards for “Best Musical Production of the Year” 7 out of the last 10 years.
